Description

Οn this 2-hour tour, you will visit all the important monuments of the town, memorials and markets, including a traditional pastry workshop where you will see people making home-made phyllo dough and pastries.

During the 16th century, the city began to take on a Renaissance character based on Venetian but also Cretan prototypes. At the time luxurious public and private buildings were erected and the city acquired a central square, a meeting place for the nobility, fountains, churches, and monasteries which have survived to this day. Rethymnon is one of the very few cities in Greece where a great number of mansions of the Renaissance are preserved in very good condition.

Combine this tour with a visit to the Fortezza fortress, for an additional guided-hour. The Fortezza is the largest Venetian fortress ever built. Although a large number of buildings in the fortress were ruined after several battles, a lot of them are preserved in good condition, such as the guardhouse, chapels, a gunpowder warehouse, storerooms, administrative buildings, as well as a mosque of the Ottoman period, with a truly impressive dome. The fortress offers a great view of the sea as well as the new and old town.

This tour is available in English, Greek, German, Italian, French.
